Set in the undulating topography of Balwyn North in Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs, Boroondara Park Primary’s school community have been raising funds to contribute to the improvement of the external grounds over a number of years. The school campus is located on a steeply sloping site in incorporates 2 main external oval spaces which are cut into the topography, resulting in some significant batters and level transitions.
The southern sports field precinct has been the focus of the school in recent years, with a range of concerns across safety, access, use, maintenance and drainage, as well as aspirations to improve the quality of the playing surface and incorporate a new athletics track.
To assist the school to work through these challenges and to help determine the best value for the hard earned funding raised by the parent and staff community, Papworth Davies was engaged to prepare a grounds masterplan for the southern sports field precinct. The commenced with an assessment of the site, a series of engagement workshops with both staff and parent groups, before the development of a site responsive masterplan and subsequent report.
The masterplan features an upgraded sports field, new DDA compliant paths and access steps, a structure for future planting exercises, an external seating amphitheatre for outdoor teaching and events as well as defined and logically zoned play areas.
The result is a carefully prepared document, responding to a range of stakeholder requirements, which will now form the basis for short, medium and long term expenditure, as well as a clearly defined list of priorities and likely costs. This will bring focus to future fund raising events and enable a targeted funding model to be implemented.
In addition, the final report provided recommendations for the logical sequencing of the various features and site interventions, all directed at achieving a long term vision for the Sportsfield and its surrounds through a series of logical stages.
The masterplan was delivered and finalised in late 2019.
