Located in the breezy bayside suburb of Brighton East along Melbourne’s inner ring of coastal suburbs, the clients for this project engaged Papworth Davies to undertake a full garden upgrade to both the rear garden and front entrance.

Central to the brief was to refresh and revitalise. While some of the garden was in good condition, other areas had become tired and in need of renewal. Importantly, any new works needed to connect seamlessly to the existing and respond to the modern Architectural style of the existing house. A large existing Liquidambar tree was to be retained, providing valuable shade in summer.

The rear garden design features large format bluestone paving selected to refresh the overall presentation and function of the pool area, opening up the space for recreation and providing safer access with a new glazed pool fence alignment. A new lawn area provides the perfect setting for relaxing in the sun with the family and is connected to the existing decking area via striking large format railway sleepers set in pebbles. A series of new garden beds have also been established and planted with layers of coastal native species as a backdrop. Simple timber seating elements complement the existing decking and building character, while new garden lighting elements create a pleasant atmosphere in the evening. The new garden scene creates pleasant views from the large building windows and reinforces the connection to the outdoors.

The front garden also received a complete overhaul with the creation of a new garden setting featuring a curved exposed aggregate driveway and a sinuous entry path. The new entrance provides visitors with a calming, tranquil walk through a verdant garden featuring masses of native grass species, climbers and a stand of Silver Banksia trees.

Our team worked closely with the client throughout the project and provided consultation and design services at both schematic and detailed design as well as project management throughout the tender and construction phases of the project.

The garden was designed and constructed in 2017 and the gardens have become well established and the new spaces much loved and utilised by the client ever since.
