Brief Description

Warburton Recreation Reserve re-imagines everything about what you might expect to experience in a public park.

Warburton Recreation Reserve re-imagines everything about what you might expect to experience in a public park.

Located on the site of what was once the town of Warburton’s public swimming pool with the iconic Yarra River only a few metres away, the new recreation reserve designed by Papworth Davies provides a stunning splash park facility as well as playgrounds catering for all age groups, outdoor fitness equipment, public toilet and barbeque facilities as well as grassed open space areas.

The design of the splash park was specifically considered in terms of the landscape and intrinsic character of Warburton and its environs with references to the Yarra River and its landscape, the town’s old pedestrian suspension bridge and the surrounding mountain landscape all evident in the detail of the park. Papworth Davies drew all of these influences into the design of the park.

The project is a triumph of local determination to make something out of the swimming pool that had been closed for more than 10 years with the Papworth Davies team working through a Feasibility and Masterplan process with Yarra Ranges Council and local stakeholders and, ultimately, to full detail design and management of the project’s construction.

Overseeing a team of specialist consultants including hydraulic, civil and structural engineers, Papworth Davies had to navigate a number of design challenges including a very low water table, preserving a number of impressive large existing trees while still retaining some elements of the old pool as historical references.

The final result is a wonderfully unique park, open all year round to the Warburton community and to visitors from afar.
